Milli Fire
September 1, 2017 Daily Update
Clear skies yesterday allowed a reconnaissance flight over the fire to assess current fire behavior. Crews patrolled the northern perimeter of the fire and continued to mop up. Fuels on a portion of the private land within the fire perimeter burned yesterday however, valuable regeneration areas on the private land are being protected. Crews strengthened containment lines to the east that cross through the private property. The southeast and south perimeters of the fire will continue to be in patrol and mop up status. The west side of the fire continues to burn down slope with occasional torching in pockets of timber in the Three Sisters Wilderness and established containment lines. On the northwest side, the fire is backing down to OR 242.
Fuels continue to burn within the fire perimeter which will produce some smoke. Fire behavior consists mostly of creeping and smoldering with occasional single-tree torching. Firefighters have found minimal hotspots within contained areas of the fire.
Several engines and crews have been working in the Lava Camp Lake area to protect features in the recreation site. Fallers have begun removing hazard trees and debris on OR 242 however the road is likely to remain closed for some time as workers continue to remove hazards, make repairs, and until Oregon Department of Transportation can assess the condition of the road.
Good progress is being made on rehabilitation and repairs in and around the contained areas of the fire. Crews, dozers, excavators and wood chippers continue to knock down berms and return control lines and dozer lines to a more natural state.
Northwest Interagency Incident Management Team 8 successfully assumed management of the fire as of 6:00 pm on Thursday, August 31, 2017.
Weather is expected to become warmer and drier, with temperatures in the 90’s over the next few days. Air quality is expected to vary as several fires continue to burn in the area. Warm temperatures can lead to clear skies and improved air quality. Sisters and surrounding areas are open for business and ready to host visitors over the holiday weekend.
Level 1 and 2 evacuations remain in effect for the Milli Fire. Call Deschutes County Sheriff’s office at 541-693-6911 with evacuation questions. Current evacuation levels: Level 2– Crossroads subdivision, Edgington Road, Remuda Road, Peterson Burn Road, Wildwing and Three Creeks Road residences. Level 1 – Tollgate subdivision, all areas between OR 242 and US 20, west of Cold Springs Cutoff (Forest Road 1018) which includes Black Butte Ranch.
