Firefighters respond to two new starts in Central Oregon

Rappellers responded to a new start this afternoon near the top of Cultus Mountain, adjacent to Cultus Lake southwest of Bend. The fire is a lightning hold-over fire that popped up this afternoon. Rappellers have been able to hold the fire to 1/10th of an acre and will spend the night mopping up.

In addition, fire crews responded to a request for assistance from the Post-Paulina Rural Fire Protection Association for a new start north of Highway 380 near the junction of Teaters Road. The fire has been stopped at 2 acres, and crews are mopping up this evening as well. The cause is under investigation.

With more and more visitors coming to the area for Monday's eclipse, fire officials want to remind everyone that firefighters are extremely busy responding to existing fires in Oregon. Please follow all fire restrictions, avoid parking over vegetation and limit smoking to areas clear of vegetation or in water. Fireworks are illegal on public lands and should not be used during the eclipse due to the extreme fire danger.
